by Kong Eu on April 12, 2011

Just had our 1st jam in about 6 months…on Sat, 2 Apr 2011 – one of the BEST evah!

One of the most interesting things about Rhythm Tap in Malaysia is the variety of people who become tappers & students - we come from a brooooaaaaad range of backgrounds and interests. But yet we’re all united with the “strange” liking for rhythm, making sounds and music with our feet and body. We’ve got architects, doctors, lawyers, bankers, artists – the whole works!

This jam was to feature this  wide-spectrum of people, interests and talents. Specifically so, the other TALENTS and artistic interests of the tappers. We have tappers who sing, act, among many other things - and re dance, some do Latin, Flamenco, breakdance, belly dance, salsa – just to name a few.

So, this time besides our usual tap/rhythm workshops, informal classwork presentations, jams etc, we also had tapper Syl Fyn do the flamenco with her sifu, Kayla, Bryan with his Latin partner Christina do an elegant Rhumba and one of our youngest tappers (Liam) guest break-dance during a tap presentation!

Flamenco!

Kayla did a short little workshop of her own, introducing everyone to a Flamenco syncopation and did some improv of her own. During this section, I was reminded that even though the background/cultures of the different percussive dances can be really diverse, we’re all still UNITED in rhythm & music!

Tapper Wen Li also did a cute song & dance (tap). We also had Syaz and Nurul (both Level 2 tap students) do a drums/tap collaboration – the drums, of course. came in super-handy for some drums/tap jammin’ at some portion of the night! I, being still in BEP mode, did an improv to “The Time” with some of the seniors towards the end of the program.

Kudos to everyone who actually tapped better than usual… Esp. so to Shana & Elicia who tapped the Level 1 graduation dance (with Liam break-dancing) – many commented on how much they liked it!

The guests (who consisted of family, friends and new acquaintances curious about Rhythm Tap) were also great this time – full of energy and had great attitude!

Through coincidence, street dancer Alam who won SYTYCD Malaysia Season 1, also happened to be there so this added on to the energy of the night!

Yes, it's really Alam...

So stay tuned for the next edition of PURE Rhythm, PURE ENERGY!
