In conjunction with the swing dance annual event SEAJam 2013, held in KL for the 1st time, the Rhythm Tappers @ Malaysia were also delighted to host an esteemed, classic tapper Chazz Young for a tap workshop on Mon, March 4!

All ears as Chazz is interviewed by the Star reporter...always a joy to listen, learn & be inspired by the stories of a master!

We jumped at the opportunity to host the workshop when suggested by Sing Yuen of Jitterbugs Swingapore. Due to logistics & costs, flying in a tap master from the West isn’t usually possible…so this was a wonderful opportunity for tappers esp. in the Klang Valley to take a master class from a tap maestro & living tap legend from the heydays of swing jazz. And not just any maestro – Chazz’s dad (Frankie Manning) was a legendary pioneer of Lindy Hop and Chazz himself has graced the Apollo Theater in New York performing with legendary jazz musicians and bands, for example, the Duke Ellington Orchestra!

It was a great opportunity for the tappers from various schools and systems all around to partake in a “master class” – a fast-paced learning experience which is vastly different from the usual teaching format of regular classes. So, it was amazing to have other schools and teachers also send their students to participate in this once-in-a-long-while workshop opportunity!

An event like this is also excellent in another way which itself presents a warm, fuzzy moment; that is, being able to connect and re-connect to other tapping groups or “hubs”. It’s a rare thing, being caught up in our own activities and styles, to have an occasion when different tapping groups can come together and tap, especially since the tap community is already so small. This workshop is now inspiring me to create moments and events (for example, our regular tap jams) where other schools and groups can join in as well…

The 2 classes literally flew by and all students had a good workout and challenge! For many, it was the first time partaking in such high-speed, intense classes…no worries, even if it seemed “impossible” to catch up, each student would’ve actually learnt a lot and will certainly help improve his/her skill in the future.

So a big THANK YOU to Chazz for conducting the workshops and to Sing Yuen for suggesting, mooting and helping out in the organizing & running of the event. Of course, thank you to Sharie, Havana Estudio and Bryan for co-organising the workshop. A big thank you also to teachers and students from other schools and groups plus all the Rhythm Tappers @ Malaysia for joining in & ensuring the success of this workshop!

And now…with more practice and work, watch your chops & skills fly-on to the next level!
