Dec 18: Exotic Tap Party-”Getaway”

by Kong Eu on January 8, 2010

Traditionally, us Rhythm Tappers hold an annual tap party where the members (mostly myself, the seniors and students) come together to just basically party, eat, drink and be merry. From our humble beginnings around 10 yrs ago (I remember our 1st party consisted of just a few students from like 2 classes back in 98/99), we’ve steadily grown into the bigger but yet still cosy group we have now. Of course, students come and go…but once a tapper, always a tapper (kinda haha).

The feel of the party is always: a party for and by the students. I sponsor the venue and a  few, extremely talented students usually help me provide/part sponsor the food and other necessities. Besides helping out, all attendees contribute a small token fee which is then redistributed/re-apportioned back to the food sponsors. We didn’t have this party last yr (as we were exhausted from our 1st show – Tap Raiders!). As our classes are now at a few different studios, this time around, I sought the cooperation from the “newer” students from all studios to help in providing food “stations” for the party. And what a feast it was! We had the usual salad station courtesy Sook Yee, lamb/dessert by Jane, BBQ by Arhnue, nasi lemak by Mus/Rozie, other desserts by Sook Pinn & tea spread by JaneR, Anne, Cindy and Sheila.

Courtesy of Sook Yee (our supreme architect, head “chef”), we found yet another wonderful hideaway right in Bangsar as the venue. Check out “exotic” Sekeping Tenggiri, right in the heart of Bangsar:

Off on on we also hold a video session potluck where students (esp.  newbies) get to watch some key documentaries and performance clips. In some years we had this session as a mid-year potluck but as the group has grown it’s rather difficult to have the video session as a party of its own. So I decided this time, to have it as a separate portion of the our year-end party; so we had the video session on the same day as a tea session prior to the night festivities!

Some people also arrived early to simply chill and relax…

To “lighten” the mood of each attendee, I brought back the “welcome drink” concept from our party at the Brickhouse 2 yrs ago. This time, newbie Susan, helped with the “bartending” and i think we all agree she did a GREAT job haha!

We started eating/drinking about 3pm with the early birds and it was non-stop food, drinks and merriment til late night.

To add to the festivities, we even had a surprise Xmas carols performance by the SNL Singers! 2 tappers (senior Wen Li and newbie Renita) happened to be members of SNL who had carolling “duties” that night. They both came for the tea session but had to leave to carol….but Wen Li returned at the end of the night with the group! Such an awesome surprise..and of course such beautiful singing. With such a beautiful venue, spirited tappers and abundance of food & drink, all in all, this was definitely a party for the books!

I wish I was there… But it clashes with my meditation…I think I should start blocking the 1st 2 weeks of December 2010’s weekends for the tap annual party…
